Bringing A Little 'Philly' To Main Street Marion

Ribbon Cutting 2018 The Big Orange Hoagie Factory, Marion, NC McDowell Native Creed Burelson has returned home; bringing some of Philadelphia's culinary culture to Main Street in The Big Orange Hoagie Factory! 

The Chamber staff and ambassadors gathered on April 2, 2018, to officially welcome him and his daughter, Sophie Burleson, to the Chamber family and back home to McDowell. 

Burleson purchased the building at 8 N. Main Street after moving back from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania saying it was the perfect spot to open up a true Philly hoagie shop, something Marion didn't have, he noticed. 

Burleson explains the nuances of crafting an authentic hoagie in a way that makes one feel guilty for calling it a sandwich! An Italian meal, the hoagie is made with the highest quality and freshest bread, high-end Italian meats, and peppers as the core ingredients. Of course, there are variations and several different condiments from which to chose, such as pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato at the "build-your-own" counter. But the bread, straight from Philly, is what Burleson says qualifies these satisfying--and rather large--meaty meals as official hoagies. He imports the bread from Liscio's Bakery in Philadelphia whose motto is, "It all starts with the bread." Along with the hoagies, the shop has a cold drink cooler with options and wire bins filled with different flavors of kettle chips line the back wall. Plans are in the works to provide desserts as well as expand the menu with heated sandwiches. 

The building itself was built ca. 1910 as the Hotel James and is listed on the National Register of  Historic Places. Wonderful examples of the original architectural details can be seen throughout the street-level space. The three-story building also has a basement which Burleson plans to make available for commercial lease. For the upper floors, he plans on renovating the top floor into a family apartment home. Later, he wants to renovate the second floor into commercial lodging space. "Those are my long-term goals," he said. "but I really want to see this building brought back to life." 

An original fireplace flanks the south wall of the dining room and the familiar soaring windows have become vertical corridors of streaming light. If you're curious about the name, here's the scoop: He chose Big because hoagies 
are quite large, Orange because it's a vibrant color that catches one's attention, and Factory because what does one do at a factor but make things? Makes sense to me.
