LINC Graduates 10th Class
The McDowell Chamber of Commerce along with its LINC (Leadership, Involvement, Networking, and Community Knowledge) partner, McDowell Technical Community College, proudly presented the 10th graduating class on June 6, 2018 comprised of 24 community-minded and passionate citizens of McDowell.
Students from the class were from all areas of focus including education, manufacturing, nonprofit, media, healthcare, law enforcement, among others. But their similarities far out-shined their differences! The class expressed a mutual love and respect for their community and gained a deeper appreciation for the progressive work being done right here.
"If you think you know McDowell County, even if you've lived here your whole life, wait until you experience LINC!" says one graduate. "The energy, the intelligence, the willingness to cooperate, the technology, the passion, the power to do great things are alive and well in this county!"
The LINC program, run by director Juanita Doggett, is the county's Leadership Program and offers an adult and two student programs, one for high school students called Student LINC and the other for rising eighth graders called CARP (Career Awareness Readiness Program). LINC serves to educate residents about the opportunities and advanced offerings that McDowell has through its industry, nonprofits, small businesses, government, and community programs. The program was founded in 2008 as an opportunity for emerging adult leaders in the County to learn about the community, says Chamber Executive Director Steve Bush. The classes involve a full day once a month for 10 months and feature a combination of site tours and presentations. Subjects included in the course are government, economic development, education, health care, business and industry, public services, arts, culture, and history.
The program is made possible by the investment of its partners, McDowell Chamber and McDowell Technical Community College and the following sponsors, The City of Marion, Duke Energy, McDowell Co. Schools, and McDowell Co. Government. The participating businesses and companies also invest time and staff resources into this program as they host our students and educate them on the exciting things happening here in our county.
